Galaxy High

Galaxy High (a.k.a Babou Nian) is a man with an international background. Born in Sweden, he moved to his native country of Gambia (West Africa) when he was only a few months old. Growing up in a society where music plays a large role and involves the entire community triggered his passion for music. He learned to play several of the traditional instruments and enjoyed break dancing with his older cousins. In 1989 he moved back to Sweden where he started to write poetry. When he moved to the area called "The Blue Hill" in Stockholm, known for its contributions to the Swedish Hip-Hop scene, he got involved in rapping. In 1995 the government granted his school with a recording studio in order to encourage the music creativity of the area. This meant free studio time which he took full advantage of - spending most of his free time making and recording songs and learning to produce music. Galaxy High recorded a demo and appeared on festivals and club venues all over Sweden. Two years later he joined a group called "The Hundreadz", established by two artists formerly signed to BMG records. The group had an electronic sound influenced by jazz and soul music. Their songs were critically acclaimed by the Swedish media and downloaded heavily by U.S college kids. Shortly after their success the group split up and went their separate ways. Galaxy High continued performing and recording and by 2003 he had featured on collaborations, mix tapes and songs released internationally and had also opened shows for artists such as Ghostface Killah, The Roots and Jeru the Damaja and so on... After moving to London Galaxy High started to experiment with his beat making and developed a unique sound. His music today consists of jazz influenced beats blended with African spice. His lyrics cover a large variety of topics with some songs containing cultural, political and social subjects communicated in a lighthearted manner. He feels that being an artist is an opportunity to share thoughts and views with the public and it is vital to make people feel positive but also question themselves and the society in which they live.
